PACmEN-CLAIM: The innovative technology for transforming marine litter into renewable energy shows great results

A research paper by the CLAIM partner institution IRIS is now available in the Procedia Environmental Science, Engineering and Management journal. “The PACmEN – CLAIM: Autonomous pyrolyser for marine litter energy valorization” article informs about the innovative self-sufficient system for detecting and converting marine litter into a 100% renewable energy, developed within CLAIM.

PACmEN thermal conversion unit

The PACmEN pyrolisis thermal conversion unit, owned by IRIS, consists of various components allowing the measurement of temperature inside the reactor, a cooling system, where the combination of hot syngas conditioning system and induction assisted pyrolyser enables a high-quality syngas.

All of the experiments have been conducted in a real marine environment with the purpose of verifying the functionality of the system. The efficiency of the plant is proven through numerous testings conducted in the IRIS laboratory, where different types of marine litter have been used. Being able to shred, transport and continuously pyrolysing marine waste, the PACmEN system proves to be a successful innovation.
