PROFILE

The mission of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is to contribute to sustainable development and to care for the environment through excellent scientific research and teaching. A unique feature of the institute is our capacity to cut through the complexity of natural-societal systems through novel interdisciplinary approaches.

INVOLVEMENT IN CLAIM

The Institute for Environmental Studies is primarily responsible for the coordination of the activities carried out in Workpackage 5, focusing on the socio-economic analysis of innovative marine litter reduction technologies. The IVM-team will focus specifically on the cost-effectiveness and economic efficiency of new marine litter reduction technologies, including their market and non-market impact assessment, the development of business models and the integrated assessment of the marine litter reduction technologies employed in CLAIM.

Organisation: Institute for Environmental Studies, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Position: PhD Student

Expertise: Environmental economics, economic modelling and valuation

Involvement in CLAIM: The objective of my work is to assess the market and non-market impacts of marine litter and their clean-up on tourism and recreation around the Mediterranean and Baltic Sea. I will develop a tourism sector model to examine the market impacts as well as use non-market valuation approaches such as random utility travel cost and discrete choice models to assess the non-market impacts of marine litter reduction technologies
