PROFILE

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a governmental, highly active marine research organization operating, with aim to carry out scientific and technological research and experimental development in all fields of the aquatic environment. The individual activities of the Institute of Oceanography (IO) Research comprise the production of “useful” knowledge in the context of “blue growth”, technology, training and, at the social level, information-awareness-education. The HCMR-IO has a long history in participating both as a partners as well as a coordinator in all EU framework programs.

INVOLVEMENT IN CLAIM

HCMR-IO is coordinating CLAIM and participates in all WPs within multiple tasks. Its main activities lie in the development of innovative microliter cleaning (Wastewater treatment plants) and monitoring devices (Ferrybox), model development as governance tools, determining the impact of marine litter on the environment and ecosystem services, as well as in the information-awareness-education.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Numerical models that are already in use will be further developed for the purpose of CLAIM for which existing databases and existing modelling systems will be used, with further upgrading using data assimilation, higher resolution, advanced drifting etc.

The FerryBox, an autonomous system for continuous monitoring of physicochemical and environmental parameters installed in the F/B Festos Palace will be used to integrate the innovative microliter monitoring device, as well as tools like a manta-net for monitoring sea surface floating microplastic particles in open seas.

Polymer identification of the collected microplastics will be conducted by using an ATR FT-IR spectrophotometer Agilent Cary 630.
